Fresh off the heels of her second independently booked European tour and opening for the likes of Fred Eaglesmith, BC's Miss Quincy is spending the summer on the Western Canadian road touring a brand new creative project that will serve as the foundation for her new album. Influenced by blues & roots, dirty guitar licks and gospel harmonies, not only does this summer's show feature a guitar/upright bass/drum playing trio made up of professional musicians from across the globe … but they're all smokin' hot ladies. Miss Quincy doesn't fit the classic girl Singer/Songwriter mold and this isn't your average all-girl band. Miss Quincy's latest album, Your Mama Don't Like Me (2010) was awarded Folk/Traditional Recording of the Year at the BC Interior Music Awards and has received accolades from BBC Radio (UK), Q Magazine (UK). Her new album is set to be recorded this winter and will be produced by Canadian roots & blues legend Tim Williams.

9:40 pm Bloody but Unbowed - "The biggest laugh at the recent screening of the documentary Bloodied But Unbowed was seeing Randy Rampage and Brad Kent pulling up to the Granville Seven in a stretch limousine. Good for them. They couldn't have afforded one in 1978. Riding in a limo in '78 wasn't a punk thing to do, but 30 years later it seems typically irreverent, if not ironic. It also signifies the status Rampage and Kent have acquired as important figures in the original punk scene. Bloodied But Unbowed is Susanne Tabata's story of how punk rock developed in the city between 1978 and '81, and hints at its downfall. It was shown at the DOXA festival of documentary films. Though both screenings were sold out and DOXA is over, there is the feeling that Tabata hasn't finished tinkering with her film. It's good, though, and a great soundtrack CD could be made of it." James Ball has performed his laidback brand of psychedelic one-liner standup in clubs and theatres across Canada and in the UK. Watching him, you may detect notes of The Far Side, The Outer Limits, Chuck Norris, and Socrates. Credits include Just For Laughs, the Halifax Comedy Festival, and the Manchester Comedy Festival. If ever in need of some inspiration check out J Blyth's blog called Them Thangs. I'm convinced the right combination of pixels on a screen can supplement vitamin D because this shit makes me happy. It's difficult to understand how this designer finds the time to keep this blog as fresh and awesome as it is without starving himself. I can waste the better part of the day just looking at it, yet he manages to find all these rad photos and put them together. I think he might be part computer, or a meth addict.

Morning tunes = Brujeria

An interview in Thrasher got me looking into what Brujeria have produced of late. It's nice to see gang members exploring other genres of music. Hip hop has dominated as choice expression for pimps, pushers and murderers for decades, and death metal is most likely full of D&D playing beer drunks who are still virgins themselves, never mind ever having really sacrificed one. Except for the Black Metal guys over seas that kill each other's singers and burn down churches, they're fucking crazy. I don't know if the dudes from Brujeria really severed that head that was pictured in their album inlay or they just found him that way, but I have the slight suspicion they might just be for real. I was also wondering if since they've never revealed their true identities, could you steal their music rights? Might be a good idea if they weren't claiming to be murderous drug cartel.

So I'm going to try to stick to this thing. Blogging that is. The plan is to simply bullshit until I've finished my coffee and spliff in the morning. Steady content may build some more frequent traffic to the site and at least get me back into writing. I'll be attending some festivals in the next few months where I'll be forced to pull some articles out of my ass in exchange for my free passes. It's best to lube that shit up first, make it as painless as possible. It's never as fun to pull something out of your arse as it is to shove it in. On the way out the fun's over and you're forced to deal with the collateral damage. Shameful I know, but I have the disclaimer of being stoned. There's a link to a preview of my latest damage on Jeff the Brotherhood in Color Magazine. This one actually went pretty smooth. It was a simple assignment where I just had to call them and write the article from home. Jake, the singer/guitarist, is a super rad kid. Just amped to be playing music with his bro. I don't know if I got the point across in the article but they seem to be from a pretty wholesome family unit. Their little sister took the photos for the articles at a family barbecue in Austin, TX and their dad is a singer songwriter. On the other side of the spectrum, Vancouver's dysfunctional family unit is sending us some of their finest. Bonitos are playing the Maq this friday with Keg Killers and it should be sick. It's rad to see the freaks are still alive and kickin'. Billy Hopeless is a true legend, the last of his kind these days.

Sometimes you get the treat of waking up to an email where a band like this wants to play at your venue. Lucky us. Judging by this video I won't be inviting them back to my place to party, but I'll definitely be tagging along. I don't think Quebec has a better export. This is surely the last tour these guys will be playing rooms like the MAQ.

After a couple months of destroying, rebuilding, sanding, trowelling, painting, and every other thing we had no business trying our hands at, the renovation is finally complete. Well... Not entirely complete, but we're up on 3 legs and our first show went off without a hitch so in a way you could say we made it. Just in time to enjoy a Easter Sunday at home. Flash in the Pan are on their way this Saturday, April 10 and tix go on sale tomorrow. Don't miss Zane Friday, April 9th for some old school hip hop and funk, no cover, sick beats.
